The students were extremely receptive to the lecture they asked many questions about the grading system and marveled at some of the exceptional timepieces offered in past Antiquorum sales. Nate used pieces from past Antiquorum catalogues to show how the grading system provides detailed information on each lot's condition, which is an important factor in determining final results at auction. Nate's lecture included an explanation of Antiquorum's grading system and an overview of past Antiquorum world records. The class, made up of students 14-17 years old, was well versed in both horological history and terminology, after only three previous one-hour classes. Richardson had warmed the class up by quizzing them on important dates in horological history. Last Wednesday, Antiquorum Watch Specialist Nate Borgelt responded to Steven's invitation.
The school is named after the African-American mathematician, scientist, astronomer, and watchmaker. Having first taught at the Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA, Steven is currently offering an eight-week "Art of Horology" course at Benjamin Banneker High School. After creating his own watch brand, Nkiru America, Steven began teaching, feeling this was the best way to share his knowledge with young people. This exhibit is on loan from the NAWCC National Watch and Clock Museum.New York, April 4, 2011- Several months ago jeweler and watchmaker Steven Richardson invited Antiquorum experts to guest lecture at his watchmaking class at Benjamin Banneker High School in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. His abilities as a cabinetmaker and mechanic allowed him to experiment with making his own unique and complicated clocks.
There is a strong resonance between the style of the clocks that he built and the watches from his original collection. Arthur traveled extensively in the late 1800s and accumulated much of his collection in Europe.Īrthur sometimes altered watch dials and cases to emphasize the elements that pleased him. Much of the collection includes uncased watch movements, and many of those are in poor condition. This exhibit showcases 14 items and interprets how Arthur was fascinated by technical and decorative details rather than a piece’s purity or rarity. One of Arthur’s stipulations was to title the collection, “The James Arthur Collection of Clocks and Watches.” As a result of curators and donors adding to it, the collection grew to 1,464 items. James Arthur (1842-1930) donated the original 1,336 items to New York University (NYU) in 1925. The collection has had a complex history. In 1982, the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC) received 1,892 items from the James Arthur Collection that had been on long-term loan at the Smithsonian.
